Last year the Student Body Association, Bethany’s student-ran party-planning committee, underwent a transformation by making the change to the Student Government Association. The rest of the Bethany Christian Community was left wondering what changes the group made, and why.
This transformation took place at the start of the 2013 school year, while former Vice Principal Tim Lehman was in charge of the group.
Current Co-President Jesse Amstutz (‘15) discussed the reasoning behind making the change from SBA to SGA in a recent interview. “We wanted it to be more than just a party planning committee,” Jesse said. “We wanted to be involved in students’ lives and their concerns.”
With Hank Willems’s return to Bethany at the start of the 2014 school year, it seemed only natural that he fill Tim’s spot as head of the group. When asked what he thought of his role in the group, Hank said, “I think of myself as a facilitator. I don’t tell the group what to do, or how to do it, but I can guide them along the way.”
Co-President Jordan Helmuth (‘15) told us about some changes to the school policy the SGA hopes to make this year. “We are trying to create a new and improved dress code, one that tries to make everyone happy. We are going to ask student’s opinions about what they do and do not like about the dress code and take their opinions to make a new dress code.”
