We all have our fair share of embarrassing moments. As it is nearing the Christmas holiday why not enjoy these embarrassing, funny, and plain old awkward situations together! I’ve compiled just some of these stories from students and faculty at our school in hopes of bringing joy and cheer. These stories will remain anonymous for obvious reasons, enjoy!
Last year for Christmas this entire family: grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins all were going to Ecuador for vacation. The problem arose when the parents of this particular student did not have update passports and didn’t have enough time to get new ones. So while the rest of the entire family, including the student, flew off to Ecuador the two parents were stuck in Chicago and had to wait at home over Christmas and several other days for their child and family members to return.
It was one of our international students first Christmas’ in the United States and they didn’t know the classic Christmas traditions of Americans. This student went several weeks thinking that all of the presents under the Christmas tree were decorations and was very surprised at how many decorations they had put under the tree. It was only until the family started opening their presents that this student realized these were legitimate gifts for each other.
This next story is one of my personal favorites that I was told. It is very short and gets right to the point, “My mom dropped the Christmas steak on the floor and my dog ate it.”
This story is from when one of our faculty was in college. It was over the holidays and he was going to go to a Christmas gathering with his girlfriend and her family. They then realized that his girlfriend left her gift for a gift exchange in her locked dorm room. They went back to the college and used his key to get all the way to the room but then when they needed her key she realized she didn’t have that either, it was locked in the room. This was over break so she was completely unable to get into the room until after break was over. She was also going to stay in her room over the next couple of days while he was going to go to his own family Christmas. So she had nothing with her for the rest of Christmas break. They ended up going to Walmart to buy clothes for the next day and another Christmas gift. She also then had to go to his family Christmas and that night had to share a bed with her boyfriend’s sister while he had to then sleep on the couch. In the end, it was a successful Christmas but not under their ideal circumstances.
The last story is again short but just as awkward as any. This student had an aunt ask for a stand-up mixer for Christmas, like the one you would have in a kitchen. Well, the grandpa of this family misinterpreted it and decided to go on to wrap an entire row boat paddle instead. You could say it was a delightful surprise for all.
