The Cafeteria will always be an important place in school, and today I got a chance to interview our chef Tara. She has been working at Bethany for two years, and she also went to Goshen College.
When I asked her what led her to become a nutrition worker, she said, Well, first my major was Bible studies and religion, but then I went to MVS(Mennonite Volunteer Service) and working with the community in Philadelphia. During that time, I talked with the people who were mentally ill, so sometimes I cooked for those homeless people, which was kind of the motivator for me to be a chef. I also ran the kitchen for refugees, primary school kids, and homeless people. After that time, I came back to Goshen and started to take care of my kids. After two years, I came to Bethany for the job in the cafeteria. Then I asked her, “why was there a new rule at the cafeteria for lunch?” she explained that last summer the Indiana Department of Education came to Bethany and checked the cafeteria, and told us we must limit what we provide for the kids, especially for dessert. She told me that our food resources always come from GFS, the truck brings the frozen food to school and we process it. When I asked her why the workers started wearing a hat this year, she said: “actually, the laws do not require us to wear the hats, but we always want to serve the best food for students.”
The last thing Tara shared was that the Bethany cafeteria always tries to be healthy and to have a variety of food for students!
