High schoolers are typically more aware of their own schoolmates; but what about the younger generations, the future seniors of Bethany? All of them have a mindset that will either shape who they become or look completely different later on. In order to gain insight on their present outlook, I interviewed five lively 4th graders: Maita, Thomas, Zak, Ellie, and Bennett.
When asked what their favorite and least favorite classes were, their answers were about the same. Maita and Thomas’ favorite is PE, Zak’s is orchestra, Ellie’s is music, and Bennett went with writing. For least favorite, however, everyone said orchestra– except for Zak, of course, who said band.
Going along with the topic of education, I then asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. Maita immediately said dentist, and Zak said a pilot or an engineer. When Ellie said she wanted to be an actress, Maita heartwarmingly responded with, “Yes, you’d make a good actress!” Meanwhile, Bennett exclaimed, “A billionaire!”
To get a better sense of who they were as individuals, I asked the 4th graders to use one word to describe themselves. The first one to respond was Thomas, who simply said, “tall.” Everyone else quickly agreed. Zak said he was artistic, Ellie answered with kind, Maita said she was funny, and Bennett said that he “outsmarts.” Then I asked the 4th graders to name one thing that made each of them happy, and they gave a wide range of answers. Most were quite normal, like Maita likes to play with her baby cousin, Zak enjoys games, Thomas loves swimming, and Ellie likes writing stories. Bennett goofily said he enjoys watching Disney and how they shut down businesses. Needless to say, we were all stunned.
My time with the cheerful 4th graders ended with the question, “What are you most thankful for?” All five of them answered the same: “Family.” It seems safe to say that the future generations at Bethany have a bright future ahead!
