The wintry cold has put a slight hold on the plans to renovate Main Street, but that won’t stop the city of Goshen. There are high hopes for Main Street and what it will become. Much effort has gone into important decisions that will decide how we get around Goshen in the years to follow. Renovation plans were set into motion in the fall of 2019 with the repair of sidewalks that were in very bad condition as well as the addition of ADA ramps for easier access all around. This was just the beginning, and as it turns out, a vital improvement.
How much do you really know about the plans that will commence this year? Maybe you have heard rumours about angled parking or general improvements to downtown. But have you heard it all?Â
Alongside angled parking and other general improvements, Main Street will be repaved. This will be a huge undertaking, but the outcome will definitely be worth it. Demolition will include ripping up and removing the old asphalt and laying down a layer of fabric to hold together the new asphalt that will be put over top. During this process, Main St. will be closed for approximately 2 weeks. Likely in May, when the new pavement is down, the next step will be mapping out angled parking spots. Angled parking takes up more space than parallel parking and as a result, Main St. will be narrowed to 2 lanes. Several 4-way stops will be installed and a new, lower speed limit will be introduced. The above improvements are projected to be finished by the end of June and are expected to cost just under $1 million.
Further measures to beautify and improve downtown Goshen are currently being entertained. These include extended sidewalks that could be used for seating by restaurants and decorative hanging art throughout the downtown. These improvements aim to make it easier to park, walk, and maneuver downtown Goshen.
