Even though it is still extremely cold and dreary outside – thanks, Indiana – we have already cleared January and are only 4 months away from the end of the school year. Around this time of year the Freshman and Sophomore classes are preparing for their first Fish Fry, Juniors are retaking the ISTEP exam which they started but didn’t finish last year as well as planning Prom and the Senior class is…well, what are they doing? Since not many people know what’s going on with the ragtag group, I decided to get the inside scoop on what they are thinking about this time of year and what preparation they are doing for what comes after high school if any.
The seniors I interviewed seemed to be ready for a new learning environment. As much as they will miss the structure that their days hold at Bethany and the tight community that they have formed with friends, it’s time for change. There is a naturally occurring phenomenon which is known colloquially as senioritis, which is characterized by one’s lack of enthusiasm or motivation in their last year of high school. Especially with the continued confusion and disruption that Covid has produced, our seniors are ready to move on and start their post high school career, hopefully without any new unexpected strains of the virus coming to cancel all of their plans.
Our seniors have some mixed emotions about leaving the life they know so well behind but are generally excited to dive into a new chapter of their lives that sports a change of scenery even if that change of scenery is just a little over a mile down the street at the Goshen College campus. Getting a fresh start, meeting new friends, exploring newfound freedoms, learning in an intensive but enjoyable environment, and expanding the scope of their academic and social spheres are all things that they look forward to doing after completing their high school education.
Best of luck seniors, have fun! Just don’t party too hard. 🙂
