The Winter Olympics are underway!
What’s more fun than staying up late watching Olympic athletes compete in obscure winter sports on the big TV with your family? Curling (so intriguing) and all the skiing/snowboarding events (I could do that) could entertain me for days!
The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is the first Olympics with 100% artificial snow. That’s right, each winter Olympics there are fewer locations with natural snowfall that can host the winter events. The 15 different sports that athletes compete in this year will surely keep you entertained for the two weeks that it is on television. Tired of watching figure skating? Fear not, you can always switch to watching spandex-clad men race down an ice track on a small sled at 80mph.
In other news, 15-year-old Kamila Valieva, who placed 1st in the figure skating team event, tested positive for a banned drug that boosts an athlete’s endurance. Russians, am I right? Beijing has yet to award the medals for this event. If Valieva is disqualified, Canada will take the bronze, Japan the Silver, and the U.S. the gold.
Also, legendary snowboarder and 3-gold medal winner Shaun White retired after finishing 4th in his last Olympic event. Canada lost to the U.S. in a preliminary men’s hockey game but the outcome will surely be different when they face off in the qualifying and final matches.
