Wordle, the word game of trying to correctly guess the word of the day, has become a national sensation overnight.
The simple puzzle game was created by engineer and artist Josh Wardle for his partner. The game was born to humble beginnings with only 90 daily players in November. The game quickly captured the interest of the world, jumping to 3 million players in 2022. One of Wordle’s attractions is that you can only play it once a day. Compared to the attention-demanding online games of today, Wordle is a refreshing break.
A number of Wordle enthusiasts have created their own spin offs for others to enjoy. Games like Nerdle, for math nerds, Crosswordle, where Sudoku meets Wordle, and Quordle, 4 Wordles at once, all share the same basic Wordle concepts but with a twist! My personal favorite is Worldle, a mouthful but very fun geography guessing game. New individually created Wordle variants keep appearing and are shared on Twitter and Facebook for others to enjoy.
