As the Spring season begins- rather tries to begin, then gets snowed or rained out, retries, gets stopped by tornadoes, tries again, and hits a wall of impatient and annoyed Midwesterners- the Spring sports season also begins. There are only three sports competing this spring: Baseball, girl’s tennis, and track & field. Let’s take a look at their 2022 season and get an idea of how their team is coming together.
The baseball team this year consists of 1 senior, 1 junior, 7 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. At 11 players, it is barely enough for a full team of 9. Despite their underclassmen-heavy team, they are fairly experienced. The team opened their season by defeating Harlan Christian 5-2, the exact same score as last year’s opener against Harlan! The team began their season with 4 games in the first week; including 2 conference games and a very windy game against Concord, one of the best teams in the area. They are currently 2-4, as of April 22.
The track team is quite large. There are 22 competing in Boy’s Track and 18 in Girl’s, making 40 total players on the team! The teams are currently 0-4 and 0-3 but have had several individual first-place finishes.
The girl’s tennis team is going to be a fun one to follow. They have only a few returning players, which includes the team’s only senior. Last year, they didn’t even have enough players for a full varsity team, but now have a full varsity and JV team. Only a few of the players have ever played tennis before, but they all are learning quickly. The team competed in a tournament over the weekend against higher-division teams, such as Penn! Unfortunately, the team did not do well considering they were playing some of the best schools in the state! They did have fun though, and learned a lot! Their coach realized it wasn’t a great start for their season and decided to “not enter them in the tournament again next year.” Despite the rough tournament, the team is currently 1-1 (Varsity) and 0-1-1 (JV).
Good luck to all teams competing this year!
