Dan Shenk, a Bethany grad from 1968, spoke in a chapel back in 2019 about a new book he was writing about his and other’s experiences with sports and spirituality. Dan Shenk also worked on the student publication back when he was in highschool at Bethany. We interviewed him over his book titled, You Are More Than Your Score: On Sports and Spirituality.
Dan knew from a young age that he would be in love with sports, which he goes into detail about at the beginning of the book. Dan learned to play many sports from a young age including basketball, baseball, and swimming. On top of that, he also used to play chess and golf which we talked about in more detail in our interview.
During our interview we talked about the reason he wrote this book, and how he was able to connect sports in his own life and others’ with spirituality, which leads him to bring up the racist history of Goshen as a sundown town and how that connects with God in his book.
You Are More Than Your Score: On Sports and Spirituality is available now in both hardcover and paper copies wherever you buy books, with an audio book version releasing sometime in 2023.
