Interterm 1 – Recap

Interterm 1 was October 9th to 11th. The middle school and high school students took a break from regular classes and spent three days learning about all kinds of topics. Here is a quick recap of all of the high school interterm classes.

Autumn Sketching (Christa Janzen): In this interterm, students sketched, made linocut prints and bound their own sketchbook. They also traveled off campus to downtown Goshen and the Meijer Gardens to do some sketching from observation.

Outdoor Adventures (Amy Thut and Michael Walker): This interterm spent three days outdoors doing various activities. They started with a canoe trip on the millrace on Wednesday followed by lunch at Universal Tamal in downtown Goshen. On Tuesday they took a 13.5 mile bike trip on the pumpkinvine trail and enjoyed lunch at the Essenhaus in Middlebury. Friday was spent kayaking on the pigeon river. Students enjoyed the mild weather and beautiful fall colors.

Kickin’ it (Edgar Silva): This interterm went to GHXST Martial Arts in Goshen where they spent three hours straight every morning learning martial arts basics. In the afternoon the group traveled to Edgar’s house where they prepared food and watched the Karate Kid movies. At the end of the three days everyone earned their white belts.

Museums Unlimited (Michael Yeakey): This interterm visited area museums that focused on a variety of topics. The group visited Bonneyville Mill and the Elkhart County Historical Museum in Bristol as well as the New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart and the new Raclin Murphy Museum of Art at Notre Dame. The group also traveled to South Bend where they visited the Studebaker Museum and toured the Oliver Mansion. The students saw some fascinating art and historical artifacts and learned a lot about local history.

Disc Golf (Brent Reinhardt): This group spent the three days touring around the area and playing disc golf. They walked about 9-7 miles per day and enjoyed the lovely fall weather. Everybody improved quite a bit and gained a new appreciation for the sport.

Horseback Adventure (Danielle Svonavec): This group spent interterm learning about, caring for, and riding horses. On Wednesday they did a crash-course in riding and horse care at Fox Run stables in Shipshewana. On Tuesday, the group went on a scenic trail ride and went fishing. On the last day they cared for horses and decorated horseshoes.

How Pizza Explains the World (Josh Weaver and Tara Swartzenduber): This interterm focused on all things pizza. They discussed what makes a pizza a pizza along with Italian immigration and culture. Guest speaker Marshal King (a local writer and pizza enthusiast) led the group on a pizza tour of Elkhart County where they visited local restaurants to try a variety of different styles and flavors of pizza. The students also made their own pizzas which were judged in a competition by Bethany students and staff. The winners of the “Kid’s Choice” category were Elena, Margot, Marcos, and Erin with their s’mores pizza and the winners of the “Adult’s Choice” category were Marta, Dominic, Elly, and Emily with their steak taco pizza.

Rocket Science (Calvin Swartzendruber): This group spent interterm building, designing, and launching model rockets. They built small alpha rockets which launched 200 ft into the air. They also designed and built larger rockets using the program RockSim. Everyone’s rocket successfully launched.

Aquarium (Brook Bennet): This interterm focused on fishkeeping. On the first day the group traveled to Chicago and visited the Shedd aquarium. They got to see all kinds of aquatic animals and they got to feed stingrays. For the rest of interterm the students learned about how to care for pet fish and they got their own aquarium and pet fish which they got to keep.

Job Shadowing (Renae Yoder): While grades 9-11 were taking interterm classes the senior class had their job shadowing experience. Each student chose two different careers they were interested in and shadowed someone in those careers. Students shadowed teachers, nurses, funeral home workers and more.
